Backpacking Safely

Backpacking is a great way to see other countries. Backpacking holidays also tend to be rather long, with some people disappearing around the world for many months. It is important that, before your adventure begins, you are ready for all eventualities and are prepared. There are a few things that you should look out for and be aware of before you leave.

You should make a checklist of the vital things you need to pack and double check them as you are putting them in your backpack. These are essential items such as your passport, copies of your travel insurance and possibly birth certificate and other items such as important medicines (if you are planning on walking about a lot, then I would really recommend a good pair of running shoes). These are the items that need to be looked after at all times and the things that will be hardest to replace should they be mislaid or stolen.

Whilst it is important to carry your passport around with you, in case of any emergencies, perhaps carrying a photocopy of your passport would be more advisable, or if you can’t do this, remember to put your passport somewhere safe such as in a zip-up pocket on the inside of a jacket or on your pants.

Also, when you are out and about abroad, try to find out which of the areas of the cities and towns you are in are the best to avoid. No-one wants to go on a wander to find themselves in a bad part of town without knowing where to go.

If you take care of the essential items on your trip and if you use a bit of common sense whilst travelling, you shouldn’t run in to any major problems. Just remember to always keep an eye on your things and keep an eye on where you are going.
